Wie spät ist es? Wieviel Uhr ist es? - telling time in German


Telling time in German is much like English.
Wie spät ist es?
Wieviel Uhr ist es?
 Es ist 7 (sieben) Uhr.
Note two things:
  • There two ways of asking what time it is. Each way is correct.
  • The word "Uhr" in this context means the same thing as English "o'clock."

Wie spät ist es?
Wieviel Uhr ist es?
 Es ist 10 Uhr 7.
Es ist 7 (Minuten) nach 10 (Uhr). Note:
  • Two ways of expressing this time.
  • "nach" means "after."
Wie spät ist es?
Wieviel Uhr ist es?
 Es ist viertel nach 6.
Note:
  • "viertel" means "quarter."
Wie spät ist es?
Wieviel Uhr ist es?
 Es ist ein Uhr 30.
Es ist halb zwei.
Note:
  • Even though Uhr is feminine, when using it for time, one says ein Uhr not eine Uhr.
  • "halb" means "half", meaning, half of the second hour of the day (or 14th hour if you are talking about afternoon).

Wieviel Uhr ist es?
 Es ist 20 (Minuten) vor 5.
Es ist 4 Uhr 40.
Es ist 40 (Minuten) nach 4.
Note:
  • "vor" means "before."
  • There are three 3 ways to express this particular time.

 Es ist viertel vor 11.
Es ist 10 Uhr 45.
Es ist 45 (Minuten) nach 10.
Note:
  • The first option is the most typical in this case.
Wie spät ist es?

Es ist 5 Uhr 53.
Note:
